Reps Urge Tinubu to Flush Out Bandits, Kidnappers from Hideouts

The House of Representatives has called on President Bola Tinubu to intensify military and security operations aimed at flushing out bandits and kidnappers from their hideouts across the country.

The resolution followed a motion moved by lawmaker Ibe Osonwa during plenary on Tuesday, amid growing concerns over escalating insecurity and repeated abductions in several parts of Nigeria.

Osonwa expressed concern over the increasing attacks on schools, worship centres, and rural communities, noting that the situation has disrupted education, farming activities, and economic life in affected regions.

He stressed that the Federal Government has a constitutional responsibility under Section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution to protect lives and property and ensure the welfare of citizens.

Lawmakers condemned the activities of criminal groups in strong terms and called for urgent, intelligence-driven military operations to dismantle their strongholds.

The House also urged security agencies to adopt more aggressive tactics to rescue victims of abduction and prevent further attacks on vulnerable communities.

As part of its resolution, the House mandated its Committees on Defence and National Security to monitor implementation of the directive and report back within two weeks.

Lawmakers further warned that if the security situation does not improve within a reasonable timeframe, stronger legislative action, including calls for accountability from security chiefs, may be considered.

The resolution reflects growing frustration within the legislature over the persistent insecurity across Nigeria, despite significant budgetary allocations to defence and security agencies.

Observers say the motion adds pressure on the executive arm of government to demonstrate clearer results in combating banditry and kidnapping, which remain major national security challenges.
