Iwobi Poised to Hit 100 Caps for Super Eagles, Joins Nigeria’s Centurion Elite

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi is set to become only the fourth Nigerian player to reach 100 international caps when Nigeria faces Portugal on Wednesday, joining the exclusive club that includes Joseph Yobo, Vincent Enyeama, and Ahmed Musa.

Currently on 99 caps with 10 goals to his name, Iwobi opted to represent Nigeria over England despite youth-level appearances for the latter. He has consistently expressed deep pride in wearing the green and white jersey, attributing it to his strong emotional connection to the country.

Joseph Yobo achieved the milestone in 2014 and captained Nigeria at the World Cup. Vincent Enyeama earned 101 caps, remembered for his heroic goalkeeping displays and pivotal role in the 2013 AFCON triumph. Ahmed Musa holds the record with 111 caps, scoring crucial goals including during the 2018 World Cup campaign.

Iwobi’s senior international journey began in 2015. One of his most memorable moments was the decisive goal against Zambia that helped secure Nigeria’s qualification for the 2018 World Cup. He has been a consistent performer across multiple Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and World Cup campaigns, showcasing versatility in midfield and attack under different coaches.

The impending milestone celebration underscores Iwobi’s dedication, consistency, and professionalism. It further highlights Nigeria’s rich football heritage and the commitment of players who prioritise national service over potentially more lucrative foreign opportunities. Fans and analysts view this as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Super Eagles.
