The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has intensified the deployment of advanced technology as part of renewed efforts to curb irregular migration and enhance overall border management across the country.
This initiative is integral to broader national strategies aimed at securing Nigeria’s extensive borders, improving data management systems, and significantly reducing incidents of human trafficking and illegal crossings. Key components include the integration of biometric identification systems, upgrades to e-passport infrastructure, deployment of surveillance tools at critical entry and exit points, continuous training of officers, and deepened collaboration with international partners such as the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and INTERPOL.
The Comptroller-General of the NIS has emphasised the importance of intelligence-driven operations and sustained public sensitisation campaigns to discourage risky irregular migration journeys, particularly among young Nigerians seeking better opportunities abroad. These measures are designed to promote legal and orderly migration while protecting vulnerable citizens from exploitation by traffickers.
The deployment of technology comes amid growing concerns over irregular migration routes that expose Nigerians to danger and damage the country’s international image.
