Edo Queens Clinch Second NWFL Title After Dramatic Super Six Triumph

Edo Queens Football Club have been crowned champions of the 2026 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) after topping the Super Six tournament in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The Benin City-based side sealed the title on Sunday with a goalless draw against Bayelsa Queens in their final match. Edo Queens finished with 10 points from five games — three wins, one draw, and one loss. Bayelsa Queens also ended on 10 points but placed second on goal difference. Nasarawa Amazons finished third with eight points, while Rivers Angels placed fourth. FC Robo and Abia Angels occupied the bottom positions.

Coach Moses Aduku commended his players for their resilience, especially after an opening-day defeat to Nasarawa Amazons. “It has been a rewarding season for us after winning the trophy. Despite losing the first game, the players picked themselves up and made Edo proud,” he said. Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Amadin Enabulele, described the victory as more than just a trophy, highlighting the development of talents for the state. He thanked Governor Monday Okpebholo for the opportunity to serve.

This marks Edo Queens’ second NWFL title, having also won in 2024 with a similarly dramatic finish against Bayelsa Queens. The triumph has been widely celebrated across Edo State as a major boost for women’s football and a source of pride for the region. Fans and stakeholders have hailed the team’s consistency and mental strength throughout the campaign, which demonstrated the growing competitiveness and quality of the Nigerian women’s league.

The success underscores the potential of women’s football in Nigeria to produce champions and inspire young girls. It also reflects positively on state investment in sports development, as Edo Queens continue to set benchmarks. Analysts believe the victory could attract more sponsorship and support for the NWFL, helping to elevate the profile of female athletes nationally and internationally. As the team looks ahead, focus shifts to continental competitions where they can represent Nigeria on a bigger stage.

This achievement comes at a time when Nigerian sports authorities are pushing for greater investment in grassroots and women’s sports to build on such successes. Edo Queens’ back-to-back titles solidify their status as one of the powerhouses in Nigerian women’s football.
