After shaky starts from the continent’s other teams, Manchester United winger Amad Diallo came off the bench to score the only goal as Côte d’Ivoire defeated Ecuador 1-0, securing Africa’s first victory at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 23-year-old needed just 34 minutes on the pitch to make his mark, completing five dribbles and delivering the decisive finish that separated the two sides. Despite Diallo’s match-winning contribution, RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande was named man of the match.
Diallo was all business after the game. “We needed that. We came here to make history. We still have two more games and we have to go into them with the same mindset and try to win,” he told FIFA. He put the result down to the team keeping their cool against a physical Ecuador side.
The victory carries significance beyond the three points. It was the first win for any African nation at the 2026 tournament, arriving after South Africa fell 2-0 to Mexico, Brazil and Morocco played out a 1-1 draw, and Sweden thrashed Tunisia 5-1. Both FIFA and CAF responded on social media, with FIFA’s official X account posting a one-word tribute for Diallo: “Him.”
The result also puts the Elephants in position to reach the knockout stage for the first time. Côte d’Ivoire have been to three World Cups before and never made it out of the group. They face Germany next, then finish the group against Curaçao. Beat Curaçao and they’re through to the round of 16.
Six other African teams haven’t played their openers yet, so the continent’s World Cup story is still just getting started.
