Instead Of  Funding Skills Training, Kano  Allocates N1.5b For Mass Wedding of 1,500  Couples

Instead of funding the acquisition of skills and offering soft loans to the indigenes, the Kano state government has concluded plans to fund mass wedding for couples at the cost of N1.5billion.

The Commander General for the State Hisba Board, Sheikh Ibrahim Daurawa, made the disclosure on Monday while briefing newsmen on the preparations made ahead of the programme.

‘The Kano State Government is to spend N1.5 billion on the entire mass wedding programme, which will soon be conducted in the state’, Daurawa said.

He explained that part of the money would be spent on the purchase of furniture, food items, dowry, clothing materials for the couples, and a capital of N100,000 to be given to each of the brides, among others, for the wedding scheme.

According to him, the board, in collaboration with the state Ministry of Health, had already begun medical screening for the prospective couples with a view to ascertaining their health status.

‘The mandatory medical screening is for hepatitis, pregnancy, HIV/AIDS, genotype, as well as other sexually transmitted diseases’, the Commander General said.

Daurawa noted that no fewer than 5,000 people applied for the programme, out of which 3,000 would be selected after the medical screening exercise.

While appreciating Governor Abba Yusuf for initiating the programme, Daurawa said the governor was expected to fix the date for the programme.

The medical screening commenced on Monday, 8 May 2026, with couples from 24 of the 44 local government areas of the state.
