Organised Labour to Engage FG on Urgent Review of National Minimum Wage

Organised labour has announced plans to formally engage the Federal Government on the urgent review of the national minimum wage to reflect current economic realities and the rising cost of living.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have signalled their intention to push for a new wage structure that adequately addresses the harsh impact of inflation, fuel price adjustments, and currency devaluation on workers and their families. Labour leaders argue that the existing minimum wage has been severely eroded by economic pressures, leaving many Nigerian workers struggling to meet basic needs such as food, housing, and transportation.

This planned engagement is expected to involve high-level negotiations with relevant government ministries, with discussions focusing on data-driven adjustments, implementation timelines, and support mechanisms for small businesses that may face increased labour costs. Labour representatives have emphasised that failure to reach a fair agreement could lead to industrial actions that might further disrupt economic activities.

The move comes as many households continue to grapple with high prices of essential commodities, making the review a critical issue for social stability. Economists have noted that a well-negotiated minimum wage increase could help stimulate domestic demand while urging the government to pair it with measures to control inflation and improve productivity. The engagement is likely to draw significant public attention as workers seek relief amid ongoing economic reforms.

Stakeholders hope the dialogue will produce an outcome that balances the needs of employees with the fiscal realities of the government and private sector. As organised labour prepares for talks, the process is expected to shape national discourse on workers’ welfare and economic justice in the coming months.
