Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai will file a no-case submission after the Department of State Services (DSS) closed its case against him in the alleged wiretapping trial.
The development was announced at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday when the prosecution said it had concluded its evidence. El-Rufai, who is facing charges related to alleged illegal wiretapping during his tenure, is expected to argue that the DSS failed to establish a prima facie case against him. His legal team has consistently maintained that the charges are politically motivated. The court is expected to hear arguments on the no-case submission at the next adjourned date.
The trial has attracted significant public interest due to El-Rufai’s prominence in national politics. The case revolves around allegations that El-Rufai authorised or was involved in the illegal interception of communications belonging to the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu. The former governor has denied the charges, describing them as part of a broader political persecution.
Legal observers believe the no-case submission could lead to the discharge of El-Rufai if the court agrees that the prosecution’s evidence is insufficient. The outcome will be closely watched, as it could have implications for similar high-profile cases involving public officials and security agencies.
