A German court has sentenced 12 members of a Nigerian-origin romance scam network to various prison terms after finding them guilty of orchestrating a sophisticated online fraud operation that swindled victims across Europe out of millions of euros.
The convictions were handed down on Thursday by the Dusseldorf District Court following a lengthy trial that uncovered an extensive criminal enterprise built around fake online identities and deceptive romantic relationships. Prosecutors said the syndicate preyed on vulnerable individuals through social media platforms and dating websites, manipulating victims into sending large sums of money under false pretences.
According to court records, the convicted individuals, aged between 25 and 45, were found guilty of offences including fraud, money laundering and participation in an organised criminal network. Investigators revealed that the group used carefully crafted online profiles to establish emotional relationships with victims before requesting financial assistance for fabricated emergencies, business investments and travel expenses.
German prosecutors disclosed that the syndicate defrauded victims of more than €5 million through its operations. The court also ordered the seizure and forfeiture of assets believed to have been acquired with proceeds from the fraudulent activities. Authorities said the recovered assets would form part of ongoing efforts to compensate victims where possible.
During the trial, investigators presented evidence showing how the network operated across multiple countries using digital communication tools, bank accounts and intermediaries to conceal the movement of funds. The operation was described as one of the most sophisticated romance fraud schemes prosecuted in Germany in recent years.
German law enforcement officials welcomed the convictions, describing them as a significant breakthrough in the fight against transnational cybercrime. They noted that online romance scams continue to pose a serious threat globally, with criminals exploiting technology to target victims across borders.
The case also highlights growing cooperation between European and Nigerian authorities in combating internet fraud commonly referred to as “Yahoo Yahoo.” Security agencies have increasingly shared intelligence and coordinated investigations aimed at dismantling cybercrime networks operating across different jurisdictions.
Experts say the judgment sends a strong message to cybercriminals that international law enforcement agencies are becoming more effective in tracking digital crimes and bringing offenders to justice. They also urged internet users to exercise caution when forming relationships online and to avoid sending money to individuals whose identities cannot be independently verified.
