A three-storey building collapsed on Thursday in the Alakija area of Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State, killing one person and leaving at least 10 others injured.
The incident occurred at about 11:40 a.m. at No. 16 Ijegun Road, causing panic among residents and business owners in the densely populated neighbourhood. Emergency responders from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Lagos State Fire Service and other rescue agencies swiftly mobilised to the scene to begin search and rescue operations.
Confirming the incident, Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, disclosed that one victim was recovered dead from the rubble while 10 others, including children, were rescued alive and rushed to nearby hospitals for medical attention.
According to eyewitnesses, the building suddenly caved in after a loud sound was heard from the structure. Residents said the building housed both residential and commercial occupants and was reportedly undergoing renovation before the collapse occurred.
Rescue workers continued combing through the debris hours after the incident amid fears that additional victims could still be trapped beneath the wreckage. Heavy equipment was deployed to aid rescue efforts while security operatives cordoned off the area to prevent further casualties.
Reacting to the tragedy, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu directed relevant agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the collapse. The governor also ordered an immediate structural assessment of nearby buildings to ensure public safety and prevent a recurrence.
Building collapse remains a major challenge in Lagos, with experts often attributing such incidents to the use of substandard construction materials, weak regulatory compliance, structural defects and unauthorised modifications. The state government has repeatedly warned property developers and building owners against compromising safety standards.
Residents have been advised to remain calm and cooperate with emergency officials as investigations continue. Authorities say further updates will be provided as rescue operations progress and the full extent of the damage becomes clearer.
