The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, activist Omoyele Sowore, Bolaji Abdullahi, Paul Ibe and the Peoples Democratic Party have rejected a court ruling delivered in Lokoja, Kogi State, describing the judgment as unjust and politically motivated.
In a joint statement issued on Thursday, the opposition figures and groups criticised the verdict, arguing that it failed to reflect the principles of fairness, justice and due process. They maintained that the ruling was “perverse, biased and lacking in merit” and pledged to challenge it through all available legal channels.
The coalition stated that it remained committed to democratic ideals and would not allow what it described as attempts to weaken opposition voices ahead of the 2027 general elections. According to the statement, the judgment raises concerns about the independence of institutions and the protection of democratic rights in the country.
The parties involved argued that the court decision could set a dangerous precedent if allowed to stand, stressing that legal disputes should be resolved transparently and without political interference. They insisted that Nigerians deserve confidence in the judicial process and electoral system.
Political observers say the development is the latest in a series of legal and political battles involving opposition parties and key political figures as preparations gradually intensify for the 2027 elections. Analysts note that court rulings relating to political parties and electoral matters are increasingly shaping the country’s political landscape.
While details of the appeal process are yet to be made public, the affected parties have vowed to pursue the matter to its conclusion. They expressed confidence that higher courts would review the ruling and deliver what they described as a fair and impartial judgment.
The latest dispute further highlights the growing tension between opposition groups and institutions involved in Nigeria’s electoral and political processes, with many stakeholders calling for respect for the rule of law and democratic principles.
