INEC Moves to Delist NDC After Court Nullifies Party Recognition

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced plans to remove the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) from the official register of political parties following a Federal High Court ruling that set aside the party’s recognition.

The commission disclosed its position on Thursday, stating that it would comply fully with the court’s directive. The development comes after the court overturned an earlier judgment that had recognised the NDC as a duly registered political party, citing procedural irregularities and lack of proper service to relevant parties.

INEC had previously challenged the judgment that favoured the NDC, arguing that due process was not followed and that the party’s registration did not satisfy all legal requirements. The electoral body maintained that adherence to established guidelines remains essential to preserving the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic process.

The decision represents a major setback for the NDC, which had emerged as one of the opposition platforms seeking to expand its influence ahead of the 2027 general elections. Supporters of the party had viewed its recognition as an opportunity to broaden political participation and provide voters with additional choices.

Reacting to the latest development, party officials condemned the ruling and described it as politically motivated. They insisted that the party would challenge the decision through the appellate courts and pursue every available legal option to protect its political status.

Political analysts say the dispute highlights ongoing tensions surrounding party registration and electoral reforms in Nigeria. While some observers support stricter enforcement of registration requirements, others argue that emerging political parties should be given greater opportunities to participate in the democratic process.

The controversy is expected to generate further legal battles in the coming weeks, with attention now focused on whether the NDC will succeed in overturning the ruling. The outcome could have significant implications for opposition politics and the broader electoral landscape ahead of the next election cycle.

For now, INEC’s decision to proceed with the delisting process signals a new chapter in the party’s legal and political challenges.
