A final-year medical graduate at Kharkiv National Medical University, Nnani Adaobi Marian, has died after sustaining injuries from a Russian airstrike on Kharkiv, days before she was due to receive her diploma.
The death was disclosed by Kateryna Bohuslavska, known online as “Kate from Kharkiv,” who has regularly documented the war since it began. According to her account, the 23-year-old was fatally wounded on June 29, 2026, alongside her friend Fatima Huseynova, while the two were heading to a graduation photoshoot. Bohuslavska said Russian forces struck the Kholodnohirskyi district of Kharkiv with aerial bombs that day, and that Adaobi later died in Germany while receiving treatment. “Nnani Adaobi Marian, a 23-year-old who was injured during a Russian strike on Kharkiv, has passed away in Germany,” Bohuslavska wrote on X. “Medical professionals in both Kharkiv and Germany fought to save her life, but unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries.” She added that Huseynova was killed on the same day in the same attack, describing both women as having their whole lives ahead of them.
Kharkiv National Medical University confirmed her death in a statement titled “In memory of Nnani Adaobi Marian,” saying doctors fought for her life first in Kharkiv and later in Germany but were ultimately unable to save her. The university said Adaobi enrolled in 2020 and distinguished herself as a capable and persistent student with strong academic results, going on to complete international internships at the University of Cambridge in 2024 and Biruni University in Turkey in 2025. It described her as bright, sincere and driven by a genuine desire to help others, and extended condolences to her family, friends and classmates on behalf of its staff and student body.
She was born April 24, 2003, and had completed her international academic programme this year, having been due to graduate in 2026 after beginning her studies in 2020.
