The Federal Government has approved a reviewed Scheme of Service for the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) in a move aimed at strengthening career progression, improving staff welfare and enhancing the agency’s operational effectiveness.
The approval was conveyed through a letter issued by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation following extensive consultations and field assessments conducted in line with established public service procedures.
According to the government, the review was designed to align NiMet’s structure with current public service standards, address identified gaps in existing cadres and reflect the agency’s specialised responsibilities as Nigeria’s apex meteorological institution.
The revised scheme introduces career pathways across junior, intermediate and professional cadres while accommodating the agency’s specialised workforce requirements.
The government directed NiMet to implement the new structure in accordance with existing Public Service Rules and other relevant regulations governing appointments, promotions and career development.
The approval follows the introduction of a new salary structure and updated conditions of service for NiMet staff earlier this year.
Officials say the reforms are expected to strengthen the agency’s capacity to support critical sectors such as agriculture, aviation and maritime services through improved weather and climate monitoring.
