The Federal Government has reiterated its determination to end terrorism and banditry across the country, while calling on the media to support ongoing security efforts through balanced and responsible reporting.
Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, gave the assurance at the Peace and Security Summit Award held in Abuja on Friday.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Office of the SGF, Mr Aminu Yar’Gaya, Akume said the government remains committed to strengthening measures aimed at restoring peace and security nationwide.
He emphasised the important role of the media in shaping public understanding of security issues and urged journalists to ensure fair and balanced coverage of terrorism and banditry-related incidents.
According to him, reports on insecurity should reflect not only the impact on victims but also the sacrifices and efforts of security personnel working to safeguard communities.
“We are concerned about reportage of banditry and terrorism in the country. We are not saying attacks should not be reported, but all sides should be reflected,” he said.
The SGF noted that the government has continued to invest resources in the fight against insecurity and remains determined to intensify its efforts.
Speaking at the event, the convener of the summit, Ms Jennifer Serrano, described the programme as timely given the security challenges facing the nation. She urged Nigerians to support initiatives aimed at combating terrorism, banditry and other criminal activities.
Also speaking, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Defence, Rep. Benson Babajimi, represented by his deputy, Rep. Ahmad Kalambaina, stressed the importance of collaboration among government institutions, security agencies and citizens in addressing security concerns.
He said peace and security remain the foundation of national development, adding that effective crime prevention depends on public awareness, trust and cooperation between communities and security agencies.
Babajimi reaffirmed the legislature’s commitment to supporting policies and partnerships that would strengthen national security, promote social cohesion and ensure lasting peace across the country.
