The Allied People’s Movement (APM) has accused the Federal Government of misrepresenting a letter from United States President Donald Trump by portraying it as an endorsement of President Bola Tinubu’s performance in tackling terrorism.
The party argued that Trump merely acknowledged Tinubu’s commitment and resolve to address insecurity rather than commending any concrete achievements in the fight against terrorism.
In a statement issued on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Abubakar Yusuf, the APM challenged the Presidency to identify any section of the letter where Trump praised specific successes recorded by the administration against terrorist groups.
The Presidency had earlier stated that Trump personally wrote to Tinubu to commend his administration’s security efforts and disclosed that the United States had deployed Special Operations Forces, including Navy SEAL Team 6, to train and support Nigerian troops.
Reacting, the APM described the Presidency’s interpretation of the correspondence as misleading.
“The Allied People’s Movement condemns the attempt by the Tinubu Presidency to mislead Nigerians by claiming that United States President Donald Trump lauded President Bola Tinubu for his actions in tackling terrorism. We insist that President Trump merely responded to a letter from the Nigerian leader and acknowledged his stated commitment to fighting terrorism,” the statement read.
The party quoted a section of Trump’s July 6, 2026 letter in which the US President wrote: “I applaud your resolve to tackle the issues plaguing your nation, especially the violence affecting Christian communities.”
According to the APM, the letter referenced commitment and determination rather than measurable achievements.
The party maintained that Nigerians were still waiting to see significant improvements in security despite repeated assurances from the administration.
It further argued that declarations of commitment must be matched with tangible results, noting that insecurity, killings and kidnappings continue to affect many parts of the country.
The APM urged the Federal Government to focus on delivering concrete outcomes in the fight against terrorism rather than seeking political advantage from international correspondence.
The party also insisted that insecurity should not be politicised and called on the administration to provide transparent assessments of the country’s security situation.
