American R&B singer Chris Brown has pleaded guilty to affray, a public order offence, in connection with a nightclub altercation that occurred in London in 2023.
Brown entered the plea on Friday at Southwark Crown Court, bringing an end to the possibility of a trial on more serious charges linked to the incident.
The 37-year-old musician responded “Guilty” when the charge was read in court, where he appeared dressed in a beige suit and dark brown tie.
His guilty plea means he will no longer face trial on allegations of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of an offensive weapon involving a bottle. Prosecutors said those charges, which Brown had previously denied, would be formally withdrawn at a later date.
The case stems from an altercation that allegedly took place on February 19, 2023, at Tape, an exclusive private members’ nightclub located in Hanover Square, London, during the singer’s visit to the United Kingdom.
Prosecutors alleged that a man was struck with a bottle before being chased and assaulted during the confrontation.
The alleged victim, who was also charged in relation to the incident, pleaded guilty to affray and is expected to be sentenced alongside Brown.
The singer, who has been on £5 million bail since his release, is scheduled to be sentenced on October 26.
Brown was arrested in May 2025 at a luxury hotel in Manchester shortly after arriving in the United Kingdom aboard a private jet. He spent nearly a week in custody before being granted bail.
Despite the ongoing legal proceedings at the time, Judge Tony Baumgartner later permitted him to continue with his planned international tour, which commenced in Amsterdam in June.
Chris Brown rose to international prominence in the mid-2000s with chart-topping hits such as Run It! and No Air. He remains one of the most successful R&B performers of his generation, although his career has frequently attracted public attention due to a number of legal controversies.
The guilty plea marks the latest development in a case that has drawn significant media attention in both the United Kingdom and the United States.
