The Kwara State Police Command has arrested a woman, Sadiat Yunusa, for allegedly killing a three-year-old girl, Ummaiyat Y., in Kaiama Local Government Area of the state.
The Commissioner of Police, Ojo Adekimi, disclosed this on Friday in Ilorin while briefing journalists on the command’s recent achievements in combating crime across the state.
According to the police commissioner, the incident was reported on July 25 at the Kaiama Divisional Police Headquarters, prompting detectives to launch an immediate investigation.
Preliminary findings revealed that the victim had been left in the care of a family member while her mother went to Kaiama Central Market.
“On July 25, 2026, detectives commenced investigation into the tragic killing of Ummaiyat Y, a three-year-old girl, following a report received at the Kaiama Divisional Police Headquarters,” Adekimi said.
“Preliminary findings established that the victim had been left in the care of a family member while her mother went to the Kaiama Central Market.”
The police alleged that the suspect lured the child away from the residence to a nearby farm settlement, where she was strangled to death.
“During that period, the suspect, Sadiat Yunusa, allegedly lured the child away to a nearby farm settlement, where she unlawfully caused her death by strangulation,” the commissioner stated.
Adekimi said detectives swiftly arrested the suspect following investigations and that she allegedly confessed during interrogation.
“Prompt investigative efforts led to the arrest of the suspect, who, during interrogation, voluntarily confessed to the commission of the offence,” he added.
According to the police, the suspect claimed that the alleged act was motivated by resentment and jealousy stemming from a prolonged domestic dispute involving her husband and his second wife.
“She disclosed that the act was motivated by resentment and jealousy arising from a prolonged domestic dispute, alleging that her husband had neglected her and her three children in favour of his second wife,” the commissioner said.
The suspect has since been charged to court, while the police assured residents that justice would be pursued and criminal cases thoroughly investigated.
The command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property and urged residents to continue providing useful information to security agencies to aid crime prevention and detection.
