Deputy Senate Minority Whip, Senator Rufai Hanga, has resigned from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), barely months after joining the newly registered political party.
Hanga, who represents Kano Central Senatorial District, announced his resignation in a letter dated August 3, 2026, and addressed to the NDC Ward Chairman in Najeria Ward, Nasarawa Local Government Area of Kano State.
The lawmaker stated that his decision takes immediate effect, bringing an end to his brief membership of the party.
His departure comes shortly after he joined the NDC alongside former Kano State Governor and political ally, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, following their exit from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
In the resignation letter, Hanga said his decision was reached after careful consideration and personal reflection.
According to him, he intends to focus on other personal commitments and career-related pursuits outside the party.
The senator expressed appreciation to members of the party for the support and cooperation he received during his time with the organisation.
He particularly thanked the ward executive committee and party members for the cordial relationships built during political activities within the party structure.
Hanga also requested that his name be removed from the party’s membership register, effectively terminating all formal ties with the NDC.
Although the senator did not disclose his next political destination, his resignation has already generated speculation within political circles regarding possible realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Political analysts note that defections and internal party movements have become increasingly common as politicians position themselves for future contests.
The NDC, which recently secured registration as a political party, has continued efforts to build structures across the country and attract influential political figures into its fold.
