APM Terminals Apapa has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability through a large-scale clean-up exercise across major sections of the Lagos Port Complex as part of activities marking its 2026 Go Green Week campaign.
The initiative saw employees of the terminal operator undertake extensive sanitation activities along key access routes within the port environment, aimed at promoting cleaner surroundings, reducing waste and encouraging responsible environmental practices.
The exercise forms part of APM Terminals’ annual global environmental campaign designed to accelerate its ambition of achieving net-zero operations by 2040 through practical and community-focused sustainability projects.
Managing Director of APM Terminals Apapa, Kamal Alhraishat, described the exercise as an important opportunity to strengthen environmental awareness and inspire collective action among stakeholders within the maritime sector.
He noted that sustainability remains central to the company’s operations, adding that initiatives such as community clean-ups, tree planting and environmental education programmes demonstrate the organisation’s commitment to translating environmental goals into meaningful action.
According to him, environmental protection requires the participation of both corporate organisations and communities, stressing that maintaining cleaner surroundings contributes to healthier and more resilient ecosystems.
Also speaking, the company’s Health, Safety and Environment Manager, Felix Ugwuagbo, said sustainability is integrated into the organisation’s daily operations and decision-making processes.
He explained that a clean port environment enhances safety, improves operational efficiency and supports the smooth movement of cargo and personnel within the maritime corridor.
Ugwuagbo added that environmental sustainability is essential for protecting workers, supporting trade activities and strengthening the resilience of Nigeria’s supply chain network.
The Nigerian Ports Authority also commended the initiative. Assistant Manager, Environment Department, Lagos Port Complex, Umar Ibrahim, described effective waste management as a critical component of safe and efficient port operations.
He noted that maintaining environmental standards within the port not only protects public health and biodiversity but also contributes to improved productivity and seamless logistics operations.
The exercise highlights growing efforts within Nigeria’s maritime sector to align port operations with global environmental sustainability standards while promoting responsible business practices.
