Nigeria, US Deepen Ties on Solid Minerals as Alake Leads Delegation to White House

Nigeria’s push to attract foreign investment into its solid minerals sector reached the White House this week, as Minister of Solid Minerals Development Dele Alake led a delegation from the Nigeria Solid Minerals Company into high-level talks with senior US officials aimed at strengthening strategic cooperation between the two countries.

According to a statement from Lara Owoeye-Wise, Special Assistant on Media to the Minister, the discussions brought Alake’s team together with David Copley, Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Global Supply Chain at the National Security Council, along with Diana London of DCI Group. The meeting’s central objective, according to the statement, was deepening the broader Nigeria-United States strategic partnership while driving increased American investment into Nigeria’s minerals industry.

The conversation reportedly covered ground across the full critical minerals value chain, from geological exploration and mining through to processing, value addition, and refining, with particular attention paid to building secure, resilient supply chains for minerals considered essential to the global energy transition. That focus reflects a broader strategic interest for Washington, which has increasingly prioritized diversifying its sources of critical minerals amid global supply chain pressures.

On Nigeria’s side, the engagement is being framed as a direct extension of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which has consistently emphasized economic diversification, industrialisation, job creation, and attracting strategic foreign investment as core policy priorities. According to Owoeye-Wise, the White House meeting reinforces that agenda specifically through investment-driven cooperation designed to support sustainable mineral development, encourage local value addition rather than raw mineral export, and build shared economic benefit between the two countries.
