The Delta State Government has suspended the Commissioner for Works (Highway and Urban Roads), Reuben Izeze, following allegations linking him to an attack on an aide to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
The suspension was announced in a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Kingsley Emu, amid ongoing investigations into the incident that reportedly occurred during a disrupted All Progressives Congress leadership meeting at the Petroleum Training Institute, Effurun.
According to the government, the decision was taken to ensure a transparent and impartial investigation by security agencies without interference from any quarter.
The administration stated that the suspension underscores its commitment to due process, public safety and the rule of law, stressing that no individual is above accountability regardless of position.
“The state government remains committed to maintaining law and order and protecting the sanctity of human life,” the statement noted.
The development came shortly after a High Court sitting in Effurun ordered the remand of the commissioner for 14 days over the alleged assault.
Authorities said the suspension would remain in effect pending the outcome of investigations into the incident, which has generated political attention within the state.
The government maintained that allegations involving public officials must be thoroughly investigated to preserve public confidence in governance and the justice system.
Observers say the case could have wider political implications given the circumstances surrounding the APC leadership meeting where the alleged attack occurred.
Security agencies are expected to continue their investigations while legal proceedings progress.
