Nigeria’s military has recorded a striking 213 per cent jump in the number of terrorists and their associates surrendering to troops across the North East over the past week, a spike officials attribute to sustained ground operations that have steadily worn down militant groups’ ability to fight, regroup, and resupply.
Acting Military Information Officer Captain Mohammed Goni disclosed the figures in a statement posted on X, crediting the surge to coordinated operations by Operation HADIN KAI, which have combined ground engagements against identified terrorist positions with deliberate efforts to disrupt logistics and supply routes across the theatre. “During the period under review, the Theatre recorded a 213 per cent increase in terrorist surrenders compared with the preceding week,” Goni said, framing the rise as evidence of growing willingness among fighters to abandon militant activity and submit through established surrender channels.
The trend was reinforced by a fresh development Wednesday, when two high-profile terrorist members surrendered to troops, bringing weapons, ammunition, and other military equipment with them. Goni pointed to that recovery as further confirmation that sustained pressure is genuinely degrading terrorist groups from within. “The recovery of these weapons and ammunition further reinforces indications that sustained military pressure is having a significant effect on the cohesion, morale and operational sustainability of terrorist elements,” he said, adding that the pattern also points to a shrinking capacity among these groups to retain fighters and sustain prolonged campaigns.
A separate case in Bama offered further evidence of internal strain within terrorist ranks. Goni disclosed that additional members surrendered to troops of 202 Battalion at New Abaram on August 7, following what he described as sustained military operations combined with internal disagreements within the terrorist enclave itself. The surrendering individuals were screened, with mobile phones and other items recovered from them, before being handed over for further processing under established procedures.
According to the military, the rising surrender numbers reflect the cumulative effect of a deliberately multi-pronged strategy, one blending offensive ground operations, precision strikes, and systematic disruption of supply networks. “By denying terrorists the opportunity to freely manoeuvre, regroup and replenish, troops continue to restrict their operational options and undermine their ability to sustain terrorist activities,” Goni said, describing the overall trend as the gradual erosion of terrorist capability, cohesion, and morale rather than any single decisive event.
Operation HADIN KAI, he added, remains committed to maintaining pressure on terrorist elements while keeping surrender pathways open for those willing to lay down arms. “The objective remains clear: to further degrade terrorist capabilities, restore security and create the conditions necessary for lasting peace and stability across the North East,” Goni said.
The Theatre Command closed its statement with an appeal to the public to continue supporting military operations by sharing timely, credible intelligence with security agencies, while also encouraging remaining terrorist fighters and their associates to abandon violence and take advantage of the surrender channels currently in place.
