Nigeria and Saudi Arabia have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening defence and security cooperation as both countries seek closer collaboration in addressing common security challenges.
The commitment was made during a visit by the Ambassador of Saudi Arabia to Nigeria, Yousef bin Mohammed Al-Balawi, to the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja.
During the meeting, Al-Balawi described Nigeria as a key partner on the African continent and reiterated Saudi Arabia’s readiness to expand engagement with the country, particularly in defence and security matters.
The ambassador said stronger cooperation between the armed forces of both nations would enhance institutional relationships and support efforts to address emerging security concerns.
He also stressed the importance of sustained collaboration in building stronger professional ties between military institutions in both countries.
Responding, General Oluyede emphasised the strategic importance Nigeria attaches to its relationship with Saudi Arabia and expressed support for expanding existing channels of cooperation.
The Chief of Defence Staff said initiatives aimed at improving professional training, operational effectiveness and institutional capacity would benefit both countries.
He also appreciated the Saudi government for its continued goodwill towards Nigeria and expressed optimism that ongoing discussions would produce practical outcomes.
According to the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the visit provided an opportunity for both countries to reaffirm their commitment to strengthening military-to-military relations.
He added that discussions also explored additional areas of cooperation considered beneficial to both nations.
The renewed engagement reflects growing efforts by Nigeria and Saudi Arabia to strengthen diplomatic and defence ties amid evolving regional and global security challenges.
