The 2026 edition of the Abeokuta 10KM Race will now take place on Saturday, October 3, after organisers, Nilayo Sports Management Limited (NSML), announced a change to the previously scheduled September 26 date.
The race, one of the major road-running events in Ogun State, will begin at 7am from Macjob Grammar School, Onikolobo, with runners following the designated route before crossing the finish line at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena, Kuto, Abeokuta.
Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NSML, Mrs Yetunde Olopade, said the postponement was necessary because of plans and arrangements that could not be ignored in the preparation for the event.
“We have had to adjust the date of the Great Abeokuta 10KM Race because of some plans and arrangements that we cannot overlook. However, I want to assure all our stakeholders that the race will retain all its significance and everything we have planned to make it a top-class event remains firmly in place,” Olopade said.
She added that the new date would not affect the standard of the competition or the organisers’ preparations.
“We are committed to delivering another memorable edition in Abeokuta. The change in date will not in any way diminish the standard of the race, and we are looking forward to welcoming athletes and other stakeholders on October 3,” she said.
The 2026 competition will maintain its strictly local format, with participation limited to Nigerian athletes.
Despite the restriction to domestic runners, NSML said the event would retain the prize money traditionally associated with the race, giving athletes an opportunity to compete for substantial financial rewards.
Meanwhile, preparations for participants will begin before race day, with kits collection scheduled to run from Wednesday, September 30, to Friday, October 2.
Athletes will be able to collect their kits at the parking lot of the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Kuto, Abeokuta.
Physical registration forms will also be available at the All-Stars Office located inside the sports arena. Participants can pick up and submit the forms at the same location.
The organisers said the date adjustment would not diminish the significance of the event, which is expected to bring together athletes, sponsors, partners, spectators and other stakeholders for the 2026 edition.
With the new October 3 date now confirmed, NSML said it remains committed to delivering another top-class road race in the Ogun State capital.
