NISO Pledges Stronger Grid Coordination to Improve Electricity Stability

The Nigeria Independent System Operator (NISO) has pledged to strengthen efforts aimed at improving the stability of the national electricity grid and supporting the effective functioning of Nigeria’s electricity market.

The commitment reflects the system operator’s responsibility for coordinating activities within the power system and supporting the efficient management of electricity supply across the country.

NISO said strengthening grid stability remains important to the development of a more reliable electricity market, particularly as Nigeria continues efforts to address challenges affecting power supply.

The operator’s focus includes improving coordination within the electricity system and strengthening processes required to maintain stability as power generation and transmission activities continue to evolve.

A stable national grid is critical to the electricity market because disruptions can affect generation, transmission and distribution activities, with consequences for electricity consumers and businesses.

NISO’s pledge comes amid continuing efforts across Nigeria’s power sector to improve reliability and strengthen the market following reforms designed to create a more competitive electricity industry.

The electricity sector has undergone significant changes in recent years, including the transition towards a more decentralised electricity market and increased participation by private-sector operators.

Against this background, effective system coordination remains essential to maintaining the balance between electricity generation and demand while managing the technical requirements of the national grid.

NISO said it would continue to work towards strengthening the system and supporting the electricity market, with grid stability remaining a key priority.

The commitment underscores the importance of coordinated operations among stakeholders across the power sector as Nigeria seeks to improve electricity reliability and create a more efficient market.
