Adamawa Declares Monday Work-Free to Honour Bamanga Tukur

Adamawa State Government has declared Monday a work-free day in honour of the late Bamanga Tukur, a former governor of the defunct Gongola State and former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The declaration was announced by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri as part of activities marking the three-day mourning period declared in memory of the elder statesman.

According to a statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Humwashi Wonosikou, the work-free day is intended to give residents an opportunity to pay their final respects to Tukur and reflect on his contributions to Adamawa State and Nigeria.

Fintiri described the deceased as a distinguished statesman whose role in the political and developmental history of the state and the country would remain memorable.

He urged residents to use the day to pray for the peaceful repose of Tukur’s soul and seek comfort for his family, friends and other associates mourning his death.

The governor also directed that all flags across Adamawa should remain at half-mast throughout the mourning period as a mark of respect for the late political leader.

Essential services, however, are expected to continue operating despite the declaration.

Tukur was buried in Yola on Sunday following funeral prayers held at the Lamido’s Palace. The ceremony attracted political associates, traditional rulers, family members and other sympathisers who gathered to honour the former governor.

Tukur served as the third civilian governor of the old Gongola State before going on to occupy several influential positions in Nigeria’s political and public life.

His political career also included his tenure as National Chairman of the PDP, further establishing him as one of the prominent figures in the country’s political history.

Fintiri said the state government’s decision to declare a work-free day was part of its broader efforts to honour Tukur and allow people across Adamawa to participate in mourning activities.

The governor called on residents to remember the late statesman not only through the mourning period but also by reflecting on the values and contributions that defined his public life.

With Monday set aside for the commemoration, Adamawa residents are expected to join the government in paying tribute to a political figure whose career spanned several decades and whose influence extended beyond the state.
