Lagos Restores Traffic After Swift Response to Dual Truck Accidents

Normal traffic flow has been restored along sections of Ikorodu Road and the National-Ashade axis after the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) successfully cleared two separate truck accidents that caused significant disruptions on the routes.

The incidents, which occurred at different locations within Lagos, prompted emergency intervention by LASEMA response teams in collaboration with other traffic and security agencies.

According to the agency, the first accident involved a fully loaded concrete mixer truck belonging to Ecocrete Construction Company. The vehicle reportedly lost control and fell across the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor on Ikorodu Road, obstructing movement along the route.

Preliminary findings indicated that reckless driving and excessive speed may have contributed to the accident. Authorities noted that the driver fled the scene before emergency responders arrived.

In a separate incident later the same night, a MACK truck transporting two 20-foot containers tilted while attempting a U-turn at the National-Ashade area. The truck reportedly suffered a tyre burst during the manoeuvre, causing the containers to shift and block a substantial portion of the roadway.

The accident obstructed nearly 80 per cent of traffic movement in the area, resulting in temporary congestion and delays for motorists.

LASEMA said its Cobra and Eagle Response Teams were immediately deployed to both locations to coordinate rescue and recovery efforts. The teams worked alongside officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the Nigeria Police Force to secure the accident scenes, manage traffic diversion and remove the affected vehicles.

The agency confirmed that no fatalities or injuries were recorded in either incident, describing the outcome as a positive result of prompt emergency response and coordinated operations among relevant agencies.

Following the successful recovery of the trucks and clearance of debris, normal vehicular movement resumed on both routes.

LASEMA reiterated the importance of adherence to road safety regulations, particularly by operators of heavy-duty vehicles. The agency urged drivers to maintain their vehicles properly, avoid excessive speed and observe traffic rules to reduce the risk of accidents on major roads across the state.

The incidents highlight the continued challenges posed by truck-related accidents in Lagos and the critical role of emergency agencies in ensuring swift response to minimise disruptions and protect road users.
