The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has stressed that the success of military operations is closely linked to the availability of functional equipment and the welfare of personnel, describing both factors as essential to maintaining an effective fighting force.
Shaibu made the remarks during the inauguration of refurbished operational vehicles and the Nightingale Club at the 1 Women Battalion in Giri, Abuja.
Represented at the event by Colonel Appolonia Anele, the Army Chief said operational platforms, particularly mobility assets, remain critical to the Nigerian Army’s ability to respond swiftly to security challenges across the country.
According to him, serviceable vehicles play a vital role in transporting troops, equipment and logistics, enabling military units to react promptly to operational demands and carry out assigned missions effectively.
He explained that the refurbishment of the vehicles forms part of broader efforts by the Army leadership to strengthen operational mobility, improve responsiveness and enhance the overall efficiency of military deployments.
Shaibu urged commanders and personnel to ensure proper maintenance and responsible use of the newly refurbished assets, noting that they are national resources that must be protected and utilised strictly for authorised military purposes.
The Army Chief also highlighted the significance of the newly inaugurated Nightingale Club, describing it as an investment in personnel welfare and morale.
He said facilities that promote recreation, relaxation and social interaction contribute significantly to the wellbeing of soldiers and help strengthen unity, cohesion and esprit de corps among personnel.
According to him, operational effectiveness is not determined solely by weapons and equipment but also by the physical and mental wellbeing of the men and women responsible for carrying out military duties.
Speaking at the event, Commander of the Nigerian Army Women Command, Brigadier General Muhammed Sani Adamu, commended the Army leadership for prioritising troop welfare through its “Soldier First” philosophy.
He noted that maintaining a combat-ready force requires both adequate operational equipment and an enabling environment that supports the welfare of personnel and their families.
Adamu said investments in welfare programmes, recreational facilities and operational assets demonstrate the Army’s commitment to improving working conditions and enhancing the effectiveness of its personnel.
The event reflects ongoing efforts by the Nigerian Army to strengthen operational capacity while ensuring that the welfare needs of troops remain a key component of military readiness and national security operations.
