The Federal Government has assured Nigerians of adequate security ahead of the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary celebrations, while reaffirming its commitment to protecting vulnerable citizens amid ongoing economic reforms.
Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, gave the assurance during a World Press Conference in Abuja marking preparations for the October 1 celebrations.
According to Akume, this year’s anniversary theme, “From Reforms to Stability: Consolidating Nigeria’s Renewed Hope for Shared Prosperity,” reflects the administration’s efforts to translate economic reforms into long-term national stability and development.
He stated that security agencies and the Armed Forces have intensified operations against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, oil theft and other threats to national security, with greater emphasis on intelligence gathering and coordinated responses.
Akume acknowledged the economic difficulties facing many Nigerians but said the government would continue implementing measures aimed at cushioning the impact of reforms on vulnerable groups while pursuing sustainable growth.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, described Independence Day as an opportunity for reflection on Nigeria’s journey, resilience and collective responsibility toward nation-building.
In a related development, the Defence Headquarters unveiled a new discount online shopping platform designed to provide affordable essential goods for military personnel, retirees, veterans and serving National Youth Service Corps members.
Developed in partnership with Zinox Group, the platform is scheduled to go live on October 1 and will operate through a verification process to ensure only eligible beneficiaries have access.
Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, said the initiative aligns with the military’s “soldier-first” philosophy and is intended to improve the welfare of personnel and their families.
The government expressed optimism that ongoing security operations and welfare initiatives would contribute to national stability as the country commemorates another year of independence.
