NDLEA Busts Nigerian-Mexican Meth Syndicate, Arraigns Two Suspected Kingpins in Enugu

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has dismantled a suspected transnational drug trafficking network allegedly operated by Nigerian and Mexican collaborators, leading to the arrest and arraignment of two suspected kingpins in Enugu State.

The agency disclosed that the syndicate was operating a clandestine methamphetamine production laboratory in Eziama community, Obeagu, Awgu Local Government Area, before it was uncovered through months of intelligence gathering and surveillance by NDLEA operatives.

The suspects, identified as 45-year-old Chukwu Obumneme Christopher, also known as Brown, and 60-year-old Chukwu Georginus Monday, alias George, were arrested following investigations into the illicit operation.

According to the NDLEA, the pair allegedly ran the laboratory in collaboration with Rodriguez Villanueva, a suspected member of a Mexican drug cartel based in Mexico City. Authorities believe the operation formed part of a wider transnational drug trafficking network.

The suspects were arraigned before Justice Mabel Taiye Segun-Bello of the Federal High Court in Enugu on a five-count charge bordering on conspiracy, organising, managing and financing a drug trafficking organisation, as well as unlawful possession of precursor chemicals used in the production of narcotics.

Both defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges. Following an application by the NDLEA for an accelerated hearing, the court fixed October 21, 2026, for the commencement of trial.

The agency revealed that three additional suspects linked to the operation remain at large and are currently being tracked by law enforcement authorities.

Investigations conducted by the NDLEA’s Special Operations Unit led to the discovery of the laboratory, which was reportedly equipped with improvised reactors, distillation equipment and other facilities used in the manufacture of methamphetamine.

Operatives also recovered large quantities of precursor chemicals, including 690 litres of methylamine, 1,000 litres of isopropyl alcohol and several hundred kilogrammes of other controlled substances believed to be intended for drug production.

Chairman of the NDLEA, Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd.), said the agency remains committed to dismantling organised drug networks and preventing Nigeria from becoming a base for international drug trafficking operations.

He assured that efforts are ongoing to apprehend all remaining suspects and bring everyone connected with the operation to justice, stressing that the agency will continue to intensify its fight against transnational narcotics syndicates operating within and beyond Nigeria’s borders.
