New Envoy Targets Stronger Nigeria-France Partnership on Security, Investment

Nigeria’s newly appointed Ambassador to France, Ayodele Oke, has pledged to strengthen bilateral relations between both countries with a focus on security cooperation, trade expansion and investment opportunities.

Oke made the commitment after formally presenting his Letters of Credence to French President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace in Paris, officially commencing his tenure as Nigeria’s 17th ambassador to the European nation.

Speaking after the ceremony, the ambassador described the assignment as an opportunity to deepen strategic ties between Abuja and Paris while advancing Nigeria’s national interests on the global stage.

He said his diplomatic mission would focus on enhancing collaboration in critical sectors, particularly security and economic development, while also projecting a positive image of Nigeria abroad.

According to him, the evolving relationship between the two countries requires renewed engagement capable of delivering tangible benefits to citizens and businesses on both sides.

Oke noted that Nigeria and France already share longstanding diplomatic and economic ties, but stressed that there is significant room for greater cooperation, especially in areas relating to investment, technology, defence and regional security.

The ambassador said part of his responsibility would be to ensure that Nigeria’s interests are effectively represented and protected in discussions involving the French government and key stakeholders.

He also emphasised the importance of promoting Nigeria’s reputation internationally, describing diplomacy as a tool not only for strengthening relations but also for shaping perceptions and attracting opportunities.

Beyond trade and security, Oke said his mission would seek to create pathways for stronger cultural, educational and business exchanges between both countries.

Observers believe the renewed focus on Nigeria-France relations comes at a time when both countries are looking to strengthen economic partnerships and address emerging security concerns in West Africa.

France remains one of Nigeria’s major European partners, with cooperation spanning energy, infrastructure, defence, education and development assistance.

Analysts say stronger diplomatic engagement could help unlock new investment opportunities while supporting efforts to address shared security challenges across the region.

Oke’s appointment is therefore being viewed as part of a broader effort to reinforce Nigeria’s international partnerships and promote economic diplomacy under the current administration.
