A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, has died in a hotel in Edo State, with police arresting three people in connection with the incident.
Uwuigbe reportedly died on Sunday, October 5, 2026, at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area.
According to a source, the lecturer had checked into the hotel with a 21-year-old woman identified as Angela Defa Jacob. The source said Uwuigbe later asked the woman to leave the room to purchase an item, but she returned to find him unresponsive on the bed.
The incident was reported to the police at about 8pm on Sunday.
Confirming the development, Edo State Police Command spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, said the deceased had lodged at the hotel and engaged the services of the woman before sending her to purchase water.
“On October 5, 2026, at about 8pm, the command received a report that Matthew Uwuigbe, a lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, had lodged at a hotel in Ekpoma and engaged the services of a 21-year-old sex worker, Angela Defa Jacob.
“He subsequently sent the woman to purchase water for him, and upon her return, she found him lying dead in the room,” Ikoedem said.
The police spokesperson said three people had been arrested in connection with the case.
Those in custody are the hotel owner, the manager and Jacob, while detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Uwuigbe’s death.
Ikoedem added that the lecturer’s remains had been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary.
The university has also confirmed that Uwuigbe was a member of its staff, although it stressed that the incident did not occur on campus.
AAU Public Relations Officer, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, said the institution was aware of the lecturer’s identity but described the circumstances as a private matter.
“We are not denying that he is our staff, but whatever he did and what happened, it is his private life. The girl in question is not our student, and everything happened outside our institution,” he said.
Police investigations are continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death. The cause of death has not been stated by the authorities.
