Nigerians Are Creating The Life They Wish They Had

Nigerian developer Shalom Rayhamen asked herself: What if The Sims took place in Nigeria? That very question gave birth to the viral game Lagos Life. Lagos Life is a browser-based multiplayer life simulator. It launched on October 1, 2026 and has blown up on the internet ever since. It requires no download, which helped it spread extremely quickly.

The irony about this game is that while Lagos life in reality can be extremely frustrating to some, millions of people are logging into the virtual Lagos, creating virtual versions of themselves, finding jobs, chasing money, paying rent, socialising, hustling and trying to climb the economic ladder.

Now not only do they have to worry about real world bills, they come home and voluntarily worry about their virtual bills too. But this time, it’s fun.

That’s the amazing thing about Lagos life. Nigerians are hyped to see themselves represented in a game. Lagos life took massive inspiration from the Sims franchise, however, the game never captured the lived experience of a Nigerian. Lagos life went viral because it took something Nigerians normally experience as frustration and transformed it into something they can control.

In real life, you don’t get to choose your starting point.

You don’t get to open a character-creation screen and decide whether you were born into money or struggle. You don’t get to select your parents, your connections, your neighbourhood or the opportunities available to you. However, in Lagos Life, you get to shape the trajectory of your life with more ease, form connections and network with virtual users as well and generally have fun doing.

Then there is money. Every conversation about a Nigerians live experience always comes back to money. Why else would millions of Nigerians obsess over a game about living in Lagos?

Real life has made “making it” increasingly difficult to define. You can work hard and still struggle to pay rent. You can get a degree and still be unemployed. You can earn more money and discover that everything else has become more expensive.

Lagos life is vastly different. Within days, someone who started out as a Lapo baby has millions in his/her account. This also exposes a truth about Nigerians and maybe humanity as a whole. While the game offers multiple ways to make money legally albeit slowly but surely, majority of users have resorted to more illegal ways to make money fast or from soliciting from friends in game. The craze for money only proves that Nigerians would do anything and take any shortcut to making wealth if the consequences are only virtual.

Overall, the game fosters community in a way that may revolutionize gaming in Nigerian. Nigerian developer and innovator Shalom Rayhamen has hinted at making several improvements and updates to the game, estimating that by year end it would be $50 million dollar franchise. For now, everyone can enjoy the escapism it brings.
