Man City Silence Anfield With Liverpool Rout as Financial Scandal Threatens Title Ambitions

Manchester City delivered a defiant response to their mounting off-field troubles on Saturday, sweeping aside 10-man Liverpool 3-0 at Anfield to maintain their perfect start under Enzo Maresca.

Goals from Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki secured an emphatic victory for the Premier League leaders, whose title ambitions remain overshadowed by the possibility of severe punishment for financial misconduct.

The encounter unfolded against a backdrop of hostility following an independent commission’s ruling that City breached more than 100 Premier League financial regulations.

Liverpool supporters made their feelings clear before kick-off, greeting the visiting team with accusations of cheating and displaying banners condemning the alleged damage to English football.

One banner inside the Kop declared that an entire generation of supporters had been cheated, reflecting the resentment surrounding City’s rise to dominance.

The controversy carries particular significance for Liverpool, who finished runners-up to City on three occasions during the past 12 years.

Despite the charged atmosphere, the hosts struggled to impose themselves on the contest.

Injuries to Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo limited manager Andoni Iraola’s attacking options, although youngster Lewis Koumas briefly threatened to break the deadlock after the interval.

His effort was denied by Gianluigi Donnarumma before the contest swung decisively in City’s favour.

Maresca introduced Doku from the bench, and the Belgian immediately unsettled Liverpool’s defence with his pace and movement.

Ryan Gravenberch subsequently brought down the winger and received a second yellow card, leaving the home side to navigate the closing stages with 10 men.

City capitalised ruthlessly.

With 25 minutes remaining, Haaland converted the rebound from Doku’s deflected effort to put the visitors ahead.

Doku doubled the advantage three minutes later with a spectacular curling finish before Cherki combined brilliantly with Josko Gvardiol to complete the rout.

The result restored City’s three-point advantage at the summit and handed Iraola his first defeat as Liverpool manager.

However, the implications of City’s financial case could ultimately outweigh their achievements on the pitch.

Investigators concluded that the club’s ownership orchestrated artificial commercial arrangements that inflated revenues and reduced reported costs by more than £900 million between 2009 and 2018.

That period coincided with City’s transformation into a major force following their Abu Dhabi-backed takeover in 2008.

Although punishment has yet to be determined, potential sanctions include substantial points deductions, relegation or even expulsion from the Premier League. Retrospective action against previous titles has also been discussed.

City have appealed the ruling, leaving the future of their domestic success uncertain.

For now, Maresca’s side continue collecting victories. Whether those results will ultimately translate into another league crown may depend as much on the outcome of their legal battle as their performances on the field.
