Nigerian international Ademola Lookman delivered a decisive contribution from the bench as Atletico Madrid secured a 2-0 victory over Manchester United in a UEFA Champions League encounter on Tuesday.
The Super Eagles forward scored Atletico’s second goal just eight minutes after entering the contest, capitalising on United’s defensive vulnerability following the dismissal of Leny Yoro.
The victory strengthened Atletico’s position in the Champions League league phase, with Diego Simeone’s side making the most of their opportunities in a match dominated by controversial decisions and missed chances.
Atletico made an explosive start, taking the lead inside the opening minute through Pablo Barrios.
Alex Baena created the opportunity after finding space in United’s defensive setup before supplying Barrios, who calmly directed his finish into the net.
The early breakthrough allowed the Spanish side to dictate the tempo, although United gradually gained possession and attempted to restore parity.
Bryan Mbeumo provided one of the visitors’ clearest attacking moments, forcing goalkeeper Jan Oblak into an important save after collecting a loose ball inside the penalty area.
Captain Bruno Fernandes also attempted to inspire a response through set pieces and long-range efforts, but United struggled to convert their attacking spells into goals.
At the opposite end, Atletico threatened to extend their advantage, with Alejandro Grimaldo striking the post from a free kick.
Julian Alvarez subsequently hit the woodwork from close range, leaving United fortunate to remain only one goal behind.
The hosts appeared to have doubled their lead shortly before halftime when Johnny Cardoso fired into the bottom-left corner.
However, a Video Assistant Referee review identified a handball in the build-up, prompting the referee to disallow the goal.
United entered the second half with renewed hope, but their prospects suffered a major setback following a disciplinary decision.
Simeone introduced Lookman in the 71st minute, adding fresh attacking energy as Atletico sought to secure the result.
Two minutes later, referee Glenn Nyberg was called to review an incident involving United defender Yoro.
Following the pitchside examination, Yoro received a red card in the 74th minute, reducing the English side to 10 players.
Atletico quickly exploited their numerical advantage, with Lookman reacting sharply to a rebound inside the penalty area in the 79th minute.
The Nigerian forward struck the loose ball into the net, doubling Atletico’s lead and effectively ending United’s hopes of a comeback.
Despite attempting to push forward, United could not overcome the deficit.
For Lookman, the goal highlighted his ability to influence important European fixtures, while Atletico claimed another valuable Champions League victory through clinical finishing and disciplined game management.
