The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) says three people have been rescued alive and one person recovered dead following the collapse of a two storey building under construction at Akinola Street, near Fadeyi Bus Stop, off Ikorodu Road.
In a statement, the agency said the incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, October 23, 2026. Its Cobra Response Team from the Onipanu Base was activated after a distress call at 12:10 a.m. and arrived at the scene two minutes later.
The responding team found the building had collapsed, with construction workers suspected to be trapped beneath the rubble. Search and rescue operations began with safety measures in place to protect both the victims and emergency personnel.
LASEMA said responders heard groaning sounds from beneath the debris, prompting the deployment of an excavator to support the rescue operation. As of 3:33 a.m., three adult men had been rescued alive, while another adult man had been recovered dead.
The rescued victims received immediate pre hospital medical care from LASEMA paramedics and the Lagos State Ambulance Service before being transferred to hospital. The agency said search and rescue efforts remained ongoing to determine whether other people were trapped beneath the collapsed structure.
The operation is being coordinated by the agency’s Director of Operations, Engr. Akinsanya, and the Head of Cappa Base, Engr. Salami, who were at the scene providing operational oversight. Other responders include the LASEMA Response Team, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LASAMBUS and officers of the Nigeria Police Force from Alagbon Division.
The cause of the collapse has not been established. LASEMA said the incident would be subject to further investigation by the relevant regulatory agencies.
The Lagos State Government expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the rescued victims a speedy recovery. It also reiterated its commitment to strengthening building monitoring and enforcement in collaboration with the Lagos State Building Control Agency.
LASEMA urged residents to report emergencies through the toll free numbers 767 and 112, assuring the public that emergency response teams remained on alert across the state.
