Liverpool survived a tense penalty shootout against Chelsea at Anfield on Wednesday night, securing a 6–5 victory after a 1–1 draw to advance to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.
The fourth-round encounter was settled from the spot after both sides failed to find a winner in regulation time, despite creating several opportunities.
Chelsea’s Wesley Fofana missed the decisive penalty, firing over the crossbar to bring an end to the visitors’ cup campaign.
The result was particularly dramatic for Liverpool, who recovered from two missed spot-kicks during the shootout to secure progression.
Konstantinos Tsimikas sent his penalty over the crossbar, while Ryan Gravenberch saw his effort saved by Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders.
However, the London club failed to capitalise, with Valentin Barco striking the post and Emmanuel Emegha having his attempt stopped by Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili.
Earlier, Chelsea had taken the lead in the 40th minute when Morgan Rogers converted a penalty awarded following a foul by Gravenberch inside the Liverpool area.
Rogers calmly sent Mamardashvili the wrong way to put the visitors ahead.
Liverpool’s response was immediate, with Cody Gakpo restoring parity just three minutes later.
The Dutch forward converted from the penalty spot after Fofana was penalised for handling the ball inside Chelsea’s box.
The quick exchange of goals ensured the teams entered the interval level, setting up a closely contested second half.
Chelsea suffered an injury setback shortly before half-time when Maxence Lacroix was forced off, prompting the introduction of Levi Colwill.
Following the restart, both managers made tactical adjustments in an attempt to break the deadlock.
Liverpool introduced Florian Wirtz and Bradley Barcola to strengthen their attacking options, while Alexander Isak and Alexis Mac Allister also entered the contest.
The hosts increased their attacking pressure, with Gakpo among those seeking opportunities to put Liverpool ahead.
Chelsea, meanwhile, threatened through Rogers and Pedro Neto but struggled to convert their chances.
Both goalkeepers produced important saves as the match remained finely balanced.
Despite Liverpool’s late attacking efforts, neither side managed to score during the four minutes of added time.
The tie consequently proceeded to penalties, where the tension continued as both teams experienced successes and setbacks.
Gakpo, Isak, Mac Allister, Wirtz, Barcola and Joe Gomez were among Liverpool’s successful penalty takers.
Chelsea remained competitive throughout the shootout, but Fofana’s final miss handed the hosts victory.
Liverpool will now prepare for the quarter-finals as they continue their pursuit of the Carabao Cup, while Chelsea turn their attention to their remaining competitions.
