Obi Challenges Tinubu to Account for Record Before Seeking Second Term

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has challenged President Bola Tinubu to tour the country and explain his administration’s performance before seeking re-election in 2027.

Obi made the call on Thursday at the Obi-Kwankwaso Town Hall Meeting in Enugu, attended by the party’s vice-presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso.

He argued that Nigerians deserved an account of how the government had utilised funds generated through revenue and borrowed from domestic and international sources.

Obi urged the President to dedicate time to visiting different parts of the country and explaining what his administration had achieved, particularly in relation to the billions of dollars borrowed.

“Whoever wants to be president must go round and account for his time. The job requires energy and time. Let him say what he has done before we give him another one,” he said.

The former Anambra State governor also criticised the country’s current conditions, citing hunger, unemployment and insecurity as challenges requiring urgent attention.

He said that if elected in 2027, his administration would prioritise national unity, security, employment, healthcare and accountability in the management of public funds.

Obi also pledged to take a direct approach to tackling insecurity, saying his government would not tolerate a situation in which children were kidnapped without decisive action from the authorities.

“I will unite Nigeria as president. I will secure Nigeria. I will not be president and someone will kidnap our children, and we will not enter the bush together,” he said.

Former presidential adviser Pat Utomi, who also spoke at the event, said Nigeria could become one of the best places to live if meaningful political and institutional change was achieved.

He urged citizens to participate actively in the electoral process, turn out to vote and protect their votes.

Similarly, Senator representing Anambra Central, Victor Umeh, described Obi and Kwankwaso as leaders prepared to serve the country and called on their supporters to mobilise ahead of the 2027 general election.
