The camp of former Anambra State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming that he sustained a neck injury in a gym accident and was hospitalised.
Obi’s spokesman, Idris Zekeri, described the claim as false during an interview with The PUNCH on Sunday, insisting that the presidential candidate was in good health.
Zekeri also dismissed photographs accompanying the online reports, describing them as fabricated images allegedly circulated to mislead the public.
“There is zero iota of truth in that rumour. No such thing happened,” he said.
The spokesman claimed he was with Obi at about 7 a.m. on Sunday before the candidate boarded a flight for an international engagement.
He further assured supporters that Obi was safe and well, rejecting suggestions that the former governor had been hospitalised following an injury.
When asked about Obi’s destination, Zekeri declined to provide details, explaining that he had not been authorised to disclose the information publicly.
The denial comes as political activities and public engagement gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general election, with social media increasingly serving as a platform for the circulation of claims about political figures.
The reports about Obi’s alleged injury had attracted attention online, prompting his media team to issue a response.
However, the spokesman did not disclose the nature of the international engagement or provide independent medical documentation. The claims of an injury and hospitalisation therefore remain unsubstantiated, while the response represents the position of Obi’s camp.
The development highlights the importance of verifying information and images circulating online, particularly when they concern the health or personal circumstances of public figures.
