Ebonyi Professionals Urges Governor Nwifuru To Step Down From Office, Withdraw From 2027 Governorship Race.

Ebonyi League of Professionals  (Barcelona Chapter, Spain) have  urged governor of Ebonyi State, Chief Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, to step down from office and withdraw from the 2027 governorship race to allow for urgent financial recovery in the state.

The position of the diaspora group was disclosed in a press statement signed by its Chairman, Mr. Charles Okorie, and made available to news outlets.

They issued an immediate demand of his resignation following  allegations of Financial Indiscretion.

In the statement, Mr. Okorie cited documents attributed to official debt oversight authorities—including the Debt Management Office (DMO)—alleging severe misallocation of state resources under Governor Nwifuru’s administration.

According to the group:

Over ₦30 billion was allegedly spent on debt servicing and the provision of internet services.

Over ₦17 billion was allegedly expended on executive guest gifts over a nine-month period.

Mr. Okorie argued that these financial reports make it imperative for Governor Nwifuru to voluntarily resign and hand over authority to his deputy to initiate a structured healing process for Ebonyi State’s finances.

The group appealed to the founding fathers and prominent political leaders of Ebonyi State to intervene promptly by advising the governor to step down before the state faces further financial distress.

“The precarious financial situation of the state calls for urgent sober reflection,” Okorie stated, emphasizing that immediate structural intervention is required to arrest what the group described as a sinking economic trajectory” he said.

Government Counter-Position & Context

Responding to similar concerns raised regarding financial oversight data, representatives of the Ebonyi State Government and Ministry of Finance have maintained that:

Inherited Liabilities: Data reflected in DMO reports primarily represents long-term debt servicing commitments inherited from past state administrations rather than new loan acquisitions.

Fiscal Management: The state executive remains focused on settling historical domestic obligations while managing public expenditures within statutory framework guidelines.
