Kenneth Okonkwo, spokesman for African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, has raised concerns over the neutrality of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) following the redeployment of Oluyemi Titilayo Adeyemi-Showunmi as Director of Electoral Operations.
Okonkwo alleged that the appointment could undermine public confidence in the 2027 general elections because Adeyemi-Showunmi is married to Segun Showunmi, a member of President Bola Tinubu’s campaign council.
Speaking during an interview on Arise News, the ADC spokesman argued that the relationship created a potential conflict of interest within a department responsible for important aspects of election administration.
He accused the electoral commission of compromising its impartiality by placing the spouse of an official associated with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in a sensitive position.
“Allowing the wife of Showunmi to be the electoral operations department officer is rigging the election before the time,” Okonkwo declared.
He maintained that electoral credibility depended not only on the conduct of officials but also on avoiding circumstances that could create doubts about their independence.
According to him, the Electoral Operations Department plays a central role in preparing and coordinating elections across the country.
Its responsibilities include the distribution of sensitive and non-sensitive electoral materials, recruitment and training of temporary election personnel, and coordination of polling and collation activities.
Okonkwo argued that the department’s responsibilities made its leadership particularly important ahead of the presidential election.
“We are not talking about whether there will be bias. We are saying that anything that has the likelihood of bias is not allowed,” he said.
He insisted that his objection concerned the possibility of perceived bias rather than any specific act of misconduct established against Adeyemi-Showunmi.
The ADC spokesman maintained that INEC must protect public confidence by ensuring that officials occupying sensitive positions are free from circumstances that could raise questions about political influence.
However, Segun Showunmi had previously rejected suggestions that his wife’s redeployment was politically motivated.
He described Adeyemi-Showunmi as an experienced career official on Grade Level 17 who had spent her professional life working with the electoral commission.
Showunmi’s position was that her appointment should be considered in light of her professional experience rather than his political affiliations.
INEC’s official directory identifies Adeyemi-Showunmi as the head of its Electoral Operations Department.
The controversy has brought renewed attention to questions surrounding institutional independence and the standards expected of election administrators.
Although Okonkwo alleged that the redeployment could compromise electoral neutrality, the account provided no evidence that Adeyemi-Showunmi had manipulated electoral processes or acted improperly in her official capacity.
The differing positions highlight the dispute over whether a senior electoral official’s family relationship with a political campaign member constitutes a conflict requiring institutional action.
