The Imo State Police Command has arrested a 26-year-old man, identified as Ifeanyi Chukwu Joseph, for allegedly pushing a 17-year-old girl, Chiamaka Chukwuokore, from a two-storey building in Owerri.
The incident reportedly occurred following an altercation between the suspect and the victim, who is the younger sister of his girlfriend.
According to the police, Chiamaka sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment in hospital in critical condition.
Following the incident, angry residents reportedly attempted to lynch the suspect. However, police operatives intervened and rescued him before taking him into custody.
The police spokesperson, Henry Okoye, confirmed that the suspect is under investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure appropriate legal action.
Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Police, Audu Bosso, has assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway. He also appealed to residents to remain calm, avoid spreading unverified information and allow the police to handle the matter.
The police have promised to ensure that justice is served in accordance with the law.
