Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has issued a strong warning that substance abuse represents a major threat to Nigeria’s national security, education, economy, and overall social stability, advocating for a comprehensive whole-of-society approach to tackle the menace.
Mbah made the declaration on Tuesday at an MTN Foundation conference held in Enugu to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse. He was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia.
The governor emphasised proactive prevention strategies through youth empowerment programmes, quality education, and accessible healthcare services. He highlighted his administration’s initiatives such as the Smart Green Schools and upgraded primary health facilities designed to better equip young people and provide necessary support systems. Mbah also called for an end to the stigmatisation of individuals struggling with addiction, instead promoting rehabilitation and successful reintegration into society.
The MTN Foundation’s Executive Director used the occasion to outline ongoing awareness campaigns that have already reached thousands of students across the state.
This intervention comes against the backdrop of rising concerns over drug abuse among Nigerian youths and its links to criminal activities, including cultism, banditry, and other forms of violence. Experts believe addressing substance abuse is critical to broader security and human capital development efforts nationwide.
