“My Heart Was Racing”: Tems Opens Up on the Pressure of Singing for Barack Obama

Nigerian Grammy winner Tems performed at one of the most high-profile cultural events of the year on Thursday, taking the stage at the grand opening ceremony of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago. She was the only Nigerian artist on the bill.

The invite-only ceremony, hosted by former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama, featured performances from John Legend, Jennifer Hudson, Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, Christina Aguilera, and U2’s Bono and The Edge. Tems performed in a vibrant red gown, holding her own in company that represented decades of global music royalty.

The Obama Presidential Center, a sprawling campus on Chicago’s South Side, is designed to inspire civic engagement and community leadership. The facility includes a museum, public spaces, educational centres, sporting facilities and community-focused attractions, and opened to the public on 19 June.

For Tems, the invitation marked another major milestone in a career that has seen her rise from the Nigerian music scene to become one of the most recognisable African voices on the global stage.

After the performance, she broke her silence. She described the experience as a blessing, extending her gratitude to the Obamas and their family for the honour of sharing the stage. But the night was not without its awkward moment. Tems mistakenly got the names of Obama’s daughters wrong while speaking on stage. She owned up to it quickly and without fuss. “Lord knows I was nervous! Please forgive me!!!” she wrote afterwards.

The reaction online was largely sympathetic. For most fans, the slip read less like carelessness and more like proof of how much the moment genuinely overwhelmed her.
