The Nigerian Senate has moved closer to its full complement of members following the swearing-in of four newly elected senators by Senate President Godswill Akpabio after recent by-elections conducted across the country.
The inauguration ceremony took place on Wednesday at the National Assembly in Abuja, where the new lawmakers formally took the Oath of Allegiance and Oath of Office before assuming their legislative duties. The senators are Olaka Nwogu of the Peoples Democratic Party representing Rivers South-East Senatorial District, Envulu Anza of the All Progressives Congress representing Nasarawa North, Ikeje Asogwu of the APC representing Enugu North, and Dayo Faduyile of the APC representing Ondo South.
The vacancies emerged following the deaths of some serving senators and the appointment of another lawmaker as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations. The Independent National Electoral Commission had presented certificates of return to the successful candidates on Tuesday ahead of their inauguration.
Addressing the lawmakers after the ceremony, Akpabio welcomed them to the Red Chamber and urged them to place national interest above political affiliations. He advised the new senators to familiarise themselves with the provisions of the Constitution and the Senate Standing Orders to enable them to contribute effectively to legislative proceedings.
The Senate President emphasised the importance of unity and cooperation in addressing national challenges, particularly at a time when the legislature is considering critical issues relating to security, constitutional amendments and economic reforms.
Several dignitaries attended the ceremony, including Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and other political stakeholders who witnessed the formal commencement of the lawmakers’ legislative responsibilities.
Political observers say the addition of the four senators is expected to strengthen representation for the affected districts and ensure that constituents have a voice in ongoing national debates. Their arrival also comes at a crucial period when the National Assembly is handling key legislative proposals capable of shaping governance and policy direction in the country.
With the Senate now closer to full strength, attention is expected to shift towards ongoing deliberations on constitutional reforms, budgetary matters and security concerns that continue to dominate the national agenda.
