The pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has declared its support for Yoruba nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, in the fight against banditry and insecurity across the South-West, urging security agencies to act on intelligence regarding alleged sponsors of criminal activities in the region.
In a statement issued on Thursday and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, the group described Igboho as a courageous advocate who has consistently raised concerns about insecurity. Afenifere said recent claims by the activist that he possesses information about individuals allegedly sponsoring bandits should not be ignored by authorities. The organisation called on the Department of State Services and other security agencies to invite him for further briefing and investigation.
According to the group, tackling insecurity requires more than military operations. It argued that identifying and prosecuting those financing or supporting criminal networks would significantly weaken banditry and kidnapping activities across the country. Afenifere warned that failure to act on credible intelligence could embolden criminal elements and undermine public confidence in security institutions.
The organisation also expressed concern over the rising wave of kidnappings in the South-West, particularly the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. It described the incident as alarming and inconsistent with the region’s reputation for relative peace and stability. The group stressed that communities should not be forced to live under constant fear of attacks and abductions.
Afenifere further advocated stronger collaboration among traditional rulers, community leaders, local vigilante groups and security agencies. It urged the Federal Government to provide additional funding, logistics and operational support for regional security outfits such as Amotekun, noting that local security structures possess valuable knowledge of their communities.
Political observers say the endorsement is likely to strengthen Igboho’s influence within parts of the South-West and intensify conversations around community-based security initiatives. It also reflects growing frustration among citizens over persistent insecurity and increasing calls for more proactive responses from government authorities.
As security challenges continue to dominate national discourse, Afenifere insists that all stakeholders must work together to restore peace and ensure the safety of lives and property across the region.
