The Federal Government has completed the handover of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu to a private concessionaire, describing the development as a major milestone in efforts to modernise Nigeria’s aviation sector and improve service delivery at key airports.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, announced the completion of the process on Thursday following meetings involving government officials, aviation stakeholders and representatives of the concessionaire. He said the arrangement forms part of the federal government’s broader airport concession programme designed to attract private investment, improve infrastructure and enhance operational efficiency.
Keyamo commended Peter Mbah for his role in facilitating the process, noting that the governor provided the necessary support and leadership required for a seamless transition. According to the minister, the concession model is expected to introduce modern management practices, improve passenger experience and generate additional revenue for the aviation industry.
Governor Mbah welcomed the development, describing it as consistent with his administration’s vision of transforming Enugu into a major commercial, logistics and transportation hub in the South-East. He assured investors and aviation operators of continued government support and an enabling environment for business growth.
Industry experts believe private sector participation could help address longstanding infrastructure and maintenance challenges facing many Nigerian airports. Supporters of the concession policy argue that improved management and investment would lead to better facilities, enhanced safety standards and increased competitiveness within the sector.
The Akanu Ibiam International Airport serves as one of the major gateways into the South-East and plays a significant role in connecting the region to domestic and international destinations. The airport is expected to benefit from upgrades in operations, customer service and commercial activities under the new management arrangement.
The handover comes amid ongoing reforms aimed at expanding Nigeria’s aviation capacity and attracting investment into critical infrastructure.
