Osun Poll: INEC Flags 385 Flashpoints, 200 Difficult Terrains

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has identified 385 flashpoints and more than 200 difficult terrains across Osun State ahead of the forthcoming governorship election, raising concerns about security and logistics as preparations intensify for the poll.

INEC disclosed this on Monday during a stakeholders’ meeting attended by security agencies, political parties, civil society organisations, traditional rulers and election observers in Osogbo, the state capital.

Speaking at the meeting, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Osun State, Dr. Mutiu Agboke, explained that the commission had conducted extensive risk assessments and mapping exercises to identify communities that could pose challenges during the election. According to him, the flashpoints consist of areas with a history of electoral violence, political clashes, voter intimidation and other security threats capable of disrupting the electoral process.

Agboke noted that the difficult terrains include remote settlements, riverine communities and locations with poor road networks that may affect the timely deployment of election materials and personnel.

He assured stakeholders that the commission was working closely with security agencies and other partners to address potential challenges and ensure a smooth electoral exercise. He also urged political actors to conduct their campaigns peacefully and avoid inflammatory rhetoric capable of provoking violence.

Representatives of security agencies pledged adequate deployment of personnel to identified flashpoints and strategic locations across the state. They warned troublemakers against attempting to undermine the election and assured residents of their commitment to maintaining law and order.

Political analysts believe the election will be keenly contested as the ruling APC seeks to retain control of the state while the PDP aims to regain power. Observers say the poll could serve as a major indicator of political alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The election is expected to attract national attention, making security and logistical preparedness critical to its success.
