President Bola Tinubu has defended the ongoing reforms in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), saying the scheme must be repositioned to meet the realities of today’s Nigeria.
The President made the assertion on Wednesday while receiving the management of the NYSC at the State House in Abuja. Tinubu emphasised that the reforms are not aimed at scrapping the scheme but at making it more impactful, technology-driven and responsive to national needs.
He assured that the welfare of corps members remains a top priority and directed relevant agencies to address challenges such as accommodation and security. The NYSC Director-General, Brig. Gen. Yushau Dogara, commended the President for his support and pledged the scheme’s commitment to producing patriotic and self-reliant youths.
The reforms have generated mixed reactions among stakeholders, with some calling for complete overhaul while others advocate for strengthening the existing structure. The NYSC, established in 1973, has historically served as a tool for national unity and youth development. However, critics have long argued that the scheme needs modernisation to remain relevant in a changing economy.
The introduction of specialised streams and extended orientation is expected to address skill gaps and make corps members more competitive in the labour market. The reforms are also designed to improve security and welfare of corps members during their service year. The President’s defence of the reforms underscores the government’s commitment to youth development and national integration.
Stakeholders have welcomed the reforms as a bold step towards making the NYSC more impactful. The changes are expected to enhance the scheme’s contribution to national development and address long-standing challenges. The government is expected to ensure that the reforms are implemented in a way that benefits both corps members and the nation.
